“When I first arrived in Hong Kong in August 2017, and saw the endless list of different sport associations of the university, I simply decided to pick the most local sport that was available. Little did I know that my choice would become the most fun, rewarding and unforgettable part of my exchange year in Hong Kong. My team became my family, and soon I learned some basic dragonboat phrases in Cantonese (imagine the faces of freshmen in summer training when a ’gwai mui’ from Finland is shouting at them in Canto...).
My favourite parts of being in the U-team and United Fishery were undoubtedly (apart from winning, of course) the team spirit and the feeling of belonging to a big, crazy family. Not only did I witness unbelievably cool cultural experiences, compete in exciting races all over Hong Kong and had the chance to be trained by a talented and lovely coach, my team also gave me the chance to grow personally. As my tip for all those thinking of trying new things in a new environment - just do it! 💪🏼🐉”
