“I have spent the longest part of my life in the Hong Kong New Territories amid various indigenous communities that have a deep cultural heritage, and while I had several encounters with traditional activities, dragon boating was probably the one that had the deepest impact on me.

I have ended up on the tiny island of Ma Wan where a fishermen community is still holding onto its traditions and lifestyle, and dragon boating comes alive on traditional festivals.

This is often regarded as a water sport of some sort, but close to home it certainly resonates very differently for those who tries to keep their unique identity alive.

These guardians of the traditions are therefore worthy of respect and admiration. I feel myself lucky to be an honored guest of this community.”
