“I have always wanted to compete in a sport that emphasises teamwork and camaraderie. Knowing that the whole boat would be affected if I gave anything less than my 100% serves as a great motivational factor for me to push past my limits. This sticks in my mind when I go through mileage training, where more effort in the water allows us to clock the distance in a shorter timing, thus shortening the duration of the set.

I continued dragon boating when I was served time in the army. It was tiring to be in camp from Monday to Friday, in addition to water trainings and CrossFit on the weekends before returning back to camp. There were many weekend mornings where I just felt like sleeping in, especially after having spent a few days in the field, but I managed to find the motivation to attend training. This taught me a lot about finding the ‘drive’ to get things done, and it is a valuable life lesson that has served me well.”
