"I find being near water so interesting. Sometimes it's very calming. Sometimes it makes my heart race. Watching, listening, and rolling with the waves. The way it interacts with my paddle, body, and boat. And since I live in Canada, how cold it can be!

I started dragon boat around 2005 being invited to a community team by a close friend and the drive to push myself eventually led to the honour of representing Canada. Dragon boat was the gateway for me to also explore other paddling sports like outrigger, sprint canoe, and surfski.

As I write this, the world is dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Being part of my True North Paddling Club and the paddling community in general has made adjusting to restrictions for physical distancing easier. Weekly video conferencing yoga, circuits, and workout challenges along with light-hearted banter has kept us engaged and together.

Selections to Team Canada were great personal achievements with the depth of athletes in our country, but my most satisfying and favourite memory is a recent one. It was when my local Hammerheads team, a group of people that first recruited me and chose to develop and suffer with me throughout the years, finally earned its first-ever berth to race at CCWC.”
